Driving Lesson - Positioning

Normal Driving Position

  • Standard road
    • Midway between kerb and centre line
  • Wide road
    • 1m (doors width) from kerb
    • Allow room for overtaking vehicles
  • Narrow road
    • No closer than 30cm from kerb
    • Slow down if need to get closer
  • Lane markings
    • Centre of lane

Parking

  • 10-15cm from kerb
    • Any closer:
      • Too hard to judge
      • Difficult if you need to reverse
    • Look after your tyres

Distance from vehicle in front

  • Stationary traffic
    • Tyres and tarmac (4-5m)
      • Room to drive round
      • If car in front rolls back
      • If anything hits you from behind
  • Upto Approx 30 MPH
    • 1 Metre per MPH
  • Above 30 MPH
    • 2 second rule (4 if wet)
    • Some roads - 2 chevrons at 70 MPH

Junctions

  • Left
    • Normal driving position
  • Right
    • Just left of centre line
  • Ahead
    • Normal driving position

Parked vehicles

  • 1m (doors width) from parked vehicles
  • Allow room for:
    • Pedestrians walking out
    • Doors opening

Cyclists

  • As much as possible – minimum 1m (doors width)
